Driving up the West Coast of South Island, New Zealand

The next several days we drove non-stop to Nelson passing through Haaste, Hokitika, Reefton and Murchison with stops for walks, coffee or lunch.  The weather was simply horrible – non-stop monsoon rains that even our windshield wipers couldn’t keep up with.  The torrential rains made sight-seeing nearly impossible.  We drove up to Franz-Josef glacier but the 40 minute trail was far too muddy and slippery to hike.  Thank goodness that we’ve seen many glaciers while living in Alaska.
