Kilo, Sumbawa, Indonesia (Thursday, August 29 to Friday, August 30)

Friendly village; fishing boats in harbor with even a pier; horse drawn carriages; conservative Muslim woman sitting in the river covered head to toe to cool off in the late afternoon sun; and even naughty little boys paddling out to our boat with no clothes on – but we still gave lollies to these silly giggling boys about seven to eight years old!  I have to admit that this was the best welcoming committee we’ve had so far in Indonesia.

The Indonesians are so curious and friendly, aside from silly little boys wearing no clothes, we were later visited by a local fisherman paddling out in his dugout canoe to meet us and check us out – Dennis gave him some fishing lures and lines.  I used all of my limited Indonesian vocabulary to find out that he had two missus and five children.  Quite common for the villagers to have one or two wives; in the larger cities such as Jakarta, it’s not surprising for Muslim men to have many more wives.  Later on, a few more boys who had heard that the Americans were giving away lollies, paddled out for their handout.

It’s a good time to be an American visiting Indonesia as the Indonesians are quite proud that President Obama was born in Indonesia.
