Woludama, Flores Island (Sunday August 11 to Wednesday, August 14)

Flores (Portuguese for “Flowers”) had a spectacular coastline with rocky mountain and shores and beautiful aqua marine water. We skipped Teluk Hading as the anchorage was too deep and way too close to shore.  We spoke to Lazy Bones (Roger and Barbara from Australia) who recommended Woludama about five miles across the bay.

While in Woludama, we had a lovely tour of the village by two English speaking college students….visited Rita’s home, and the Catholic school and church (Barbara joined us for the tour).  We visited with the headmaster and teachers during their break; we enjoyed lots of cakes and juice – Rita did an excellent job with translation and our Indonesian phrase book also helped.  When the school children greet you, they first shake your hand and then kiss the top of it out of respect for their elders.  The Portuguese settled here so there’s a very large Catholic population.

Jim and I took some great walks along the dirt road hugging the coast – local villagers were busy harvesting the cashew and banana trees.  Lush jungle!
